Confirmation at St. Dunstan's
Confirmation, Reception and Re-affirmation
Confirmation is a sacramental rite (ceremony) whereby a youth affirms for himself/herself the promises made by their sponsors (parents & godparents) at Baptism. It is also available for adults who have never been confirmed or people from other denominations desiring to become fully part of the Episcopal Church.
Reception is available for those who made a mature public affirmation of their faith and were confirmed in another Christian denomination and would like to re-affirm their vows as a member of the Episcopal Church.
Re-affirmation is the opportunity for members of the congregation to renew or reaffirm their faith before the Bishop. Persons often elect to re-affirm their faith because they have returned to Church after a long absence, have had a spiritual awakening as a result of a personal experience, or are deepening their commitment to Jesus in the Church through an elected leadership position, a new ministry, etc.
Preparation
Preparation for youth begins in the fall of their 8th grade year and continues until the spring of their 9th grade year. Youth are expected to attend worship, participate in the life of the Church community, read assigned material and attend monthly conversations, and discover an outreach or social justice ministry that helps them understand themselves as Christians today.
Preparation for adults includes assigned reading material and monthly conversations over a six month period.
We also ask that both youth and adults attend and participate in the Triduum (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and The Great Vigil of Easter) as part of their preparation. Although divided into three parts, this is the central liturgy of our faith.
Confirmations are held at the Cathedral in Newark in the spring and we join the youth and adults of other churches in a large celebration.
